32% Increase in Food Stamp Usage
In 2009, 33,490,000 people received food stamp benefits. As of October 2016, the last month reported for FY 2016, 44,219,123 people received food stamp benefits.
The US population is estimated at roughly 324 million, according to US Census Bureau estimates. This means that 13.6% of the population are on food stamps.
Due to this increase, the cost of food stamps to taxpayers also increased while Obama was in office. In 2009, food stamp recipients received a combined $50.3 billion in benefits. This figure is now up to $66.6 billion, indicating an increase of $16.3 billion.
